I have worked almost 6 months as a temporary worker was told I may be let go in the next few weeks. Will I be eligble for benefits?

What if my job said I couldn’t work within a 50 mile radius for one year when you were hired. Then you got terminated frtom said job and unemployment was given for 26 weeks. Then you search for jobs and your well over qualified for the job but thry won’t hire you because that company stops them? But I earned wages in the quarter I am in and it’s been a year I was told I can’t receive benefits from the same company more than once. But I did earn wages during the quarter and I’ve been pushed over by that company for a year.

    • You can’t use those wages (LAG) in a second claim unless you’ve worked during your benefit year. Your hands are tied by the noncompete but that has nothing to do with UI rules on the work requirement before you can use the LAG.

If I only worked for 4 months and was laid off, can I receive unemployment? Although I don’t think I was laid off, I think it was my timeliness.

    • Apply for benefits. When asked for reasons for discharge say you don’t know, because you don’t. Let employer tell MD. It’s possible they won’t. MD will examine all your earnings from either 04/01/16-03/31/17 or 07/01/16 through 06/30/17 and send an inquiry to your employer on reasons for the discharge. You will or won’t get benefits depending on employer response.

Hi, I have been out of work since January 2017 due to major illness. My employer has recently terminated my employment with the company, am I now eligible for unemployment benefits?

    • Discharge because of a medical absence is not disqualifying. However, in order collect benefits you must be able and available – that is able to search for and accept work if offered. In order to preserve wages in your base period, apply now. MD should approve the claim. You would need to provide medical evidence to MD that you are A&A before MD could pay benefits.

I have not received my money card and I have already been approved and have been paid multiple times as I can see how much the total is when I file my web cert. I try to Call the unemployment office and I get stuck on hold for 45 min and I can’t just sit on hold I have a 13 month old baby so I can never speak to anyone. Can you please tell me what I can do? I really need my money to pay my bills and it’s been almost 6 weeks since I filed and I was told by the person who called me for my phone interview that I was approved and would receive my card in the mail, which I knew nothing about the phone interview thank god I answered the phone, because I’ve received next to no paper work regarding anything I was supposed to do or not do, but I know I should have received the money card by now. Please tell me what I’m supposed to do??!

Wanted to know if I qualified for unemployment. Work almost a year

  • I have been working for an agency based on D.C. & Maryland. The agency has terminated me and others this week.
    Question:
Do I have to apply in both jurisdictions for unemployment benefits?
    Thanks.

    • No. Only one state will pay your benefits – and that is the state to which your employer reported your wages. The easiest way to determine where to apply is to ask your employer. If you can’t do that, MD pays a slightly higher benefit than D.C., so you could apply there first. If MD has no record of your wages, then apply in D.C.
