My husband lost his job early July 2017, filed two or three claims, and has not heard back. He has not received anything in the mail confirming his application was received. The local office refers him to the 1-800 number in Sacramento. No one ever answers or returns his messages. We are coming around to September and need those checks! Suggestions for how to get someone respond and look into his case? Should he just drive to Sacramento, and if so, will they bump him somewhere else?

    • CA does NOT take almost eight weeks to communicate with claimants on a new unemployment claim application. For some reason, CA has not received and is not processing this claim.

      Your post raises these questions:

      1. What do you mean he filed two or three claims?
      2. Did he reopen an existing claim – or has he submitted a application for benefits for a NEW claim?
      3. Has he filed biweekly certifications for benefits?
      3. Did he submit these filings online or by mail?
      4. Lastly, if he is reopening an existing claim, are you sure any benefits remain on that claim to be paid out?

If he submitted his application via mail instead of filing and certifying online, the application has most probably been lost.

Fyi – at this point, after initially applying for benefits ONLINE in early July he should have:

      (1) received within seven days of application a written notification of base period earnings, potential monetary award and weekly benefit amount,
      (2) an online account established on the EDD website,
      (3) the ability to submit biweekly certifications online,
      (4) received written notice of an interview scheduled three weeks after application if he was fired or discharged,
      (5) received written notice of claim approval or denial ten days after interview, and
      (6) if denied, received written information on why CA made the decision it did and how to appeal.

Further, since early July, he should have filed at least four biweekly claim certifications either by mail or online – as follows:

      Weeks ending 7/8 and 7/15
      Weeks ending 7/22 and 7/29
      Weeks ending 8/5 and 8/12
Weeks ending 8/19 and 8/26 (certification submitted today)

Further, CA does NOT pay by check. It issues a BofA debit card or makes direct deposit to your checking account. If hubby applied online, he should also have set up direct deposit – much cleaner than a debit card and avoids delays. Because CA won’t send a debit card until the claim has been approved, you can’t access the money until you get the card. Set up direct deposit to avoid this delay.

It very much sounds like – especially if he filed by mail – he will need to visit a CA office to get this straightened out. These offices do have phone banks direct to claims reps – since you say you can’t get through on the phone.

If CA has no record of this claim, he will be starting from scratch this week – which means no benefits retro to his early July job loss will be paid. You may be able to appeal that or get a rep to backdate the application date if you have proof of his filing in early July – i.e., copies of applications mailed to CA.

  • I did not get my full check this time, I paid into the fund since it started, can you tell me why

    • When did you file for benefits?
What was the remaining balance on your claim?
Is this your first biweekly claim with an unpaid waiting week, or is it your final biweekly claim?

The final biweekly claim for a 26-week claim only pays one week, not two, as the other week was paid with your first biweekly claim which had an unpaid waiting week.
